Hello!
Finally I found some time from preparing for final exams to finish
processing of my thunderstorms data from Severe thunderstorms on Tuesday.
The damage was actually so big that more that tens of thousands of people
were without power.
Tarmo Tanilsoo
Here is the report
--
I knew about these thunderstorms approaching since Saturday, when they were
mentioned in EMHI's 4 day forecast. Finally, they arrived here.
Since the morning, I was looking for thunderstorms. Whole day, I was
checking thunderstorm radars. At afternoon, I measured the record high
temperature of year 2005. After 14:00, towering cumulus appeared in the sky.
At 14:54, I discovered a thunderstorm. Preliminary lightning number was 10
per minute. At about quarter past 15, I issued a thunderstorm warning for
Laguja. At 15:37, thunderstorms arrived to Kuressaare. At 16:00, I posted a
message to my weather forum about eyewitness report that thunderstorms are
arriving to Kuressaare, dark cloud is in southern sky and thunder is being
heard. Sky started to get cloudy in Laguja. Some Altocumulus Lenticularis,
Towering Cumulus and white hazy clouds had appeared to the sky. At 16:47, I
counted 32 lightnings per minute. Thunderstorm was moderate according. At
16:50, I saw some suspicious clouds in the sky. Lightning radars showed,
that thunderstorms are getting on Mainland. I've checked one of my friends
weather site and at his place, temperature was dropped 7 degrees during the
thunderstorm. At 17:23, there were two suspicious dark cloud. One was at
South(170°) and second one in West(260°). As found out later, the first one
was thunder cloud. At 17:29, I counted 50 lightnings per minute from AM
band. That meaned that thunderstorm was severe. Noises are very loud and I
go listening for any thunder sound. And a few minute after I step out and
looking the cloud in souther nsky, I hear thunder. Clock shows 17:32. At
17:41, the thunderhead center is at 170 degrees, direction 350 degrees. At
17:53, light rain started and strong wind rose. I turned computer off.
Thunder arrives above Laguja and it ends for 19:20. The sky is totally
cloudy, I see dark cloud of of thunder in overcast sky. It looks that all is
over for today. Temperature has already dropped down to 20-21 degrees. But
no! Already, I could see a dark cloud approaching from South. The thunder
sounds from East go calm and you could hear new thunder from South. And
suddenly, at 19:34, I saw a very dark cloud coming thru. It gets darked and
darker. It is moving even faster than clouds during a gale. And then I found
out that the slowly darkening area what I thought to be edge of thunder
cloud, was actually a WALL CLOUD! A supercell thunderstorm was approaching
to my home area. At 19:38, strong squall winds arise. They dissipate at
20:00. It is hard to understand whether it is raining or just the strong
winds are blowing. At 19:40, I see some mammatus type clouds. At 19:45, I
step out from kitchen in the house. Windows are open to North over there. I
could see the edge of the wall cloud yet. And then I see it - two FUNNEL
CLOUDS are coming down. But they dissipate before they reach the ground. I
want to run to my observing site and grab my compass to start measuring
angles, but then I recall that I already have my compass with me. One funnel
cloud, even two! It's azimuth is 50 degrees(NorthEast). At 19:49, I saw
another funnel cloud, what dissipates quickly. Still, very strong winds are
blowing. Thunder arrives above us and bringing us many rain. Next hours,
Lagujas pends with thunderstorms. For 22:00, thunder clouds have gone so
much away, that you cannot hear thunder anymore. At 22:06, it is covering
90% of the sky, but no thunder sound anymore. Azimuth of its center is 80
degrees. I saw a fog at 22:19
The total damage:
Tens of thousands people without power
Trees down in some places
Radio transmission interrupted.
