Hello,
I received another confirmation of a simultaneous observation of NLC
and aurora on July 15/16, 2000. Bernt Hoffmann, observing from Flensburg
(close to the Danish border) saw NLC between about 22 UT and 22:30 UT.
The auroral display started at about 21:30 UT. It reached its highest
intensity shortly after 22 UT. The NLC - one silvery-bluish band - were
fairly bright, appeared near the azimuth of the Sun in 20-30 deg
elevation,
and disappeared quite rapidly after about 30 minutes.
Tom McEwan (Glengarnock, Scotland) also mentioned that he suspected
NLC during the aurora display, but the was not sure because of lower
clouds at the same time.
Unfortunately, I had relatively thick clouds in the lower northern
sky. So I was able to see the brightest part of the aurora, but no
NLC at the same time.
If we can roughly determine the position and extension of the NLC and
the aurora, one could also estimate the spatial distance between the
two regions in the atmosphere, and further, whether the described
rapid disappearance of the NLC might be related with a heating of the
mesopause due to the aurora.
Greetings,
Juergen
