Part of the interference effect is from the shape of the droplet. Oblate is an approximate word, but a much better descriptor, like it or not, is the top half of a hamburger bun. The bottom of a raindrop tends to be flat because of the aerodynamic forces acting on it.

Don't forget that raindrops grow larger as they approach the ground because of collection/coalescence. Bigger raindrops have a greater fall speed than smaller ones, which get scooped up. Smaller raindrops are rounder. So there's a lot of interesting physics in there.
