Lucky you Michael!
Ellipses are hard to get and see, because they are so close to the sun.
They are much easier to see around the moon, but they are not very
frequently observed halos.
Some of the first convincing observations of elliptical halos were made in
United States in the beginning of 20th century (probably the first
elliptical halo observation was made in 1901 by C.M. Broomall).
I am aware at least one observation of elliptical halo in United States
few years ago by Walter Tape, but I do not remember did he get any photos
of that case. First known photographed cases are from year 1987 by Finnish
observers. Subhorizon counterparts of ellitical halos, namely Bottlinger's
rings, were photographed already earlier at least in USA.
