Hi there!

It's springtime once again and the halo phenomena are awaiting to be observed. The Grand European halo project will be arranged already the third time in succession. The project will be participated by observers at least from Finland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain, and in addition observers from Romania (!). It's interesting to see how people will be doing at their distant quarters of Europe when a really good display shows up, but it's nice also to compare observations of common halos, isn't it? Photographed rare halos are a criterion of the film prizes awarded after the project (just as last year) to the best 10 halo trackers of Europe!

Arrangements of the project are outlined in the following. These instructions and the material will be BY DEFAULT sent to those who participated last spring! But if you didn't participate last April and would like to do it NOW, please inform us and you will receive the material quite soon by ordinary mail.

The project is carried on in April 1998. Some arrangements have changed since last spring. This time the observations are reported in a drastically simplified way in order to encourage everyone to participate. The reports are made ONLY in certain forms that will be sent to the observers. The displays should be DRAWN (accompanied with place, date, time and first letters of the names of the observer) in the boxes on the form. Additional data regarding each display is written on the other side of the form: names of the halo types observed, and comments as many and as detailed (the more detailed the better) as you want. Please indicate also if you have tried to photograph the phenomena. An example illustrating this (make a better yourself) will be enclosed in the letter.

Notice that we accept observations ONLY in this rather confined format (that is because there will be roughly hundred observers in the project but a limited number of people doing the summary)! Notice also that the drawings play the biggest role. The same format will be used by all observers all around Europe. The observation reports (and photographs of rare halos, if you want to try the film prize) should be sent to Helsinki after April. The project summary will be written in cooperation with Finnish and German networks and sent to the participants.
