Why does the corona [sic] around the moon look less vivid when viewed thru binoculars?

I was looking at the moon on a slightly
foggy night, and there was a wide halo
around the moon, somewhat rainbow
like, presumably from the fog. But
when I looked at the moon again
through binoculars, the corona did not
look nearly as bright, colorful or big.
Why?
