We have several examples of phenomena like that in Finland. When
the wheather is rather clear, the light beams are not visible and
you can see only the projected light spot on the cloud layer. It
is of course normally elliptical, if the beam is not perpendicular
to the cloud layer.
Another more interesting phenomenon happen, when there is only
thin fog or cloud layer. This is totally or almost invisible,
but you can see still to spot on the layer. This have caused many
UFO reports and people hardly believe that the spot is caused by
a light beam. By moving light source you can make very fast
motions of the spot.
