Regarding fast nucleation:
Anyone who has lived beside an open river and gets very cold air masses
move over knows that ice crystals form very rapidly. I've got pictures of
solar pillars at 2 metres distance that consist of a few hundred (?)
crystals from the cloud of condensation above the river. Some of the
flakes were quite big, close to a cm and VERY reflective on a face, enough
for me to take several pictures of the individual flake that caught the
sun.
I know this was an aside to the Bottlinger's rings, but I wanted to put my
observation in that it does happen.
Alister.
