In July 95, I was able to see and record on video a brilliant sub Sun while flying northward during late (local) afternoon over central Italy. The cloud appeared to be cirro-stratus. The image was very sharp edged but often appeared elongated tending to multiple in the vertical direction - I am reasonably sure that this was not caused by the aircraft window.

I do not understand the appearance of Bottlinger's rings - would someone care to give a description?
