In addition to halos the past few days, I noticed that during our summer
or dry season, as we call it in the tropics, there is an increased
incidence of pearlescent clouds (those cloud patches which appear very
highly colored with mint green, baby pink, lilac, baby blue, and the like)
which readily capture my attention since their color is so demanding of
attention compared to the usual color of the clouds and the sky.
Last month, there was a particularly intense display, when a dark cloud
band (probably a front) was coming in from the north, and the sun was
several degrees above the western horizon in the afternoon (time was
about 4 p.m. local time). The particularly intense display really
showed a lot of colors, all irridiscent, and there was this cloud
patch that was oval in shape, much like the shape of an eye, that
stood out against the background. Other smaller, wispy clouds in
the surroundings were shining with a strong orange color, while the
main oval cloud was shifting in color from pink to mint green to lilac.
This morning I caught sight of this phenomenon again quite early,
coming in in front of a dark cloud band, after an early morning
rainshower. The sun was partially obscured by the cloud band.
Would their mechanism be similar to that of halos? I've noticed that
they normally occur together with dark cloud bands, probably a precursor
to rainclouds or incoming fronts.
Keep looking up!
