Dear Walt,
I wasn´t myself there. I was waked up today by a call from Finnish
television station 4. The absolutely absurd thing about it was that
they cited to me what "halo researchers" had told about the display
(distorted things of what I had myself told yesterday to one reporter)
and wishing for video tape and interview. And actually the whole
thing had started yesterday when I was contacted by a small local
newspaper of eastern Finland. its professional photographers had
taken this display above rarely open waters of Savonlinna city island.
We ve had an exceptionally mild winter and at large stream places
like Savonlinna the waters are largely still open, have not frozen.
The idiotic part of the thing is that we are now dealing with
photo press professionals who smell money and copyright stuff (great
attitude). I got to view a digital picture taken by a wideangle lense
(the whole 22 area and more, but not the 44 area!!) of a supermega bright
pair of sundogs; gorcieusly mindblowing bright (either about the same or
almost same as Saskatoon brightness); full 22 halo much fainter,
complete above horizon, parts faintly visible against ground too. Slight
upper 22 tangent arc. And definite NO to circulate the picture nor use it
anyhow until time being; they asked to contact again today after they
have published it themselves. (They also made contact to STT which is
Finnish general press notice office, which lead to national circulation
announcement about the display; hence TV got interested)
I telephoned them yesterday several times; two times just to try to reach
both photographers and ask them not to destroy a single digital photo file
of it; especially if it covers areas of sky other than the brightest
parts. Sofar it seems they took mainly shots of sundog area only except
one picture should be vertical with same wide angle; hence circumzenithal
area as well. They promised to send that picture but changed mind and
didnt send anything any more.
